F.A. Cup Extra Preliminary Round
The F.A. Cup usually adds that little something extra and this match in front of a large crowd proved no exception. A dramatic last gasp penalty converted by big Jimmy Deabill did the trick. The weather & pitch were excellent and what slight breeze there was was at Kidlington’s backs in the first period.
The match started quite cagily with both sides looking to size each other up. Abingdon certainly looked to be gaining the upper hand, and so it proved in the 16th minute when an attack culminated in a near miss by Ben Green. He shot over the bar from 10 yards out. The same player then had another opportunity in the 24th minute. This time the ball fell to him in a good area, but he shot wide under the challenge of Kiddies Brad Chalmers. It wasn’t until the 27th minute that a Kidlington player had a decent attempt on goal. The effervescent Kieran Sanders beat his defender out wide; he cut into the box, but then sent his shot into the side netting. Next Abingdon had what were probably their two best chances of the match. Firstly a ball over the top eluded the Kiddie defenders and Town’s Graham Edney was first to it and one on one with keeper Tom McNamara. As Edney tried to go round McNamara he stood firm and deflected the ball away. Edney must be wondering exactly what happened to his next attempt in the 36th minute. Lance Williams sent in a terrific cross from the right flank, the forward raced onto it at the far post, the ball then seemed to hit the side of his foot and ballooned over the bar. Late in the half Kidlington looked to be getting a bit of a foot hold back in the match. Firstly Deabill saw visiting keeper Matt Dixon get a hand on to a speculative shot from just outside the box, then Jack Quainton let fly with a rasping drive which Dixon did well to palm over the bar. As the half time whistle blew it was as a bit of a relive to Kiddie’s supporters as had Abingdon gone in a goal in front I don’t think anyone could have argued as they had generally been the better team in this first half.
H.T. 0 – 0.
The first thing of note at the start of the second period was a booking for Deabill after a clash with Town’s Christian Perkins. Kidlington looked a better side in this second period and the game was definitely more even. Deabill flicked on for Adam Lovegrove in the 51st minute. Lovegrove controlled it but then shot wide. Tommy Hayday let fly after a good attacking move from Kidlington, but it was deflected wide for a corner. As the game progressed both sides started to make their substitutions. Darren McNamara came on for Hayday and he was soon involved in a move that saw Mark Baker put in Sanders with a cheeky back heel. Sanders let rip and the ball just shaved the upright with Dixon beaten. Kidlington looked to be getting on top now for the first time in the match. Lewis Coyle came on to replace a tiring Lovegrove in the 79th minute, and Jack Johnson replaced Quainton shortly afterwards. These two added extra impetus and with a tiring Abingdon side dropping deeper and several of their players now wilting Kidlington started to really push on. Baker had an attempt saved by Dixon and as the game went into the last few minutes Sanders was denied again by the keeper when he turned his shot behind for a corner. To be honest though at this stage it looked like going to a replay. Deep into injury time Coyle picked up the ball in central midfield. He ran at goal skipping over a couple of challenges. He let fly with a tremendous shot which Dixon did well to palm away. Deabill was first to the ball and crossed it back in for Baker. Baker inside the 6 yard box was pole-axed from behind. Match referee Tom Blanch immediately pointed to the spot, penalty! The tension was biting as it seemed to take an eternity for him then to be ready for Jimmy Deabill to take it. Deabill eventually ran in and hammered his shot past Dixon to send Kidlington into the next round. When the match kicked off again there was barely time for any real action before the final whistle.
At the end of the day Kidlington and their followers are delighted to be through, but spare a thought for Mark O’Hara and his troops, they are a good side and on another day it could have been them progressing. However as they always say you make your own luck. Kidlington Defended better in the second half and in the end were the better team in the latter stages, instead of playing time out for a replay they went for a goal and eventually got it. Well done to the ‘young guns’ & COYG.
