FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier Division side Kidlington FC's are pleased to learn that Martin Baker has been awarded the prestigious accolade of Oxfordshire Football Association Groundsman of the Year.
Martin or 'Bakes' as we all known him here at Yarnton Road works tirelessly on 'his' playing surface and the confines of the ground all year round. It is testament to his endeavours that we have such a fantastic pitch for our teams to perform on week in week out.
Bakes' budget for preparing the playing surface for the new season was only a measly £300 and when you compare this to other local club's outlays you really understand what a great job he does. Its all the more surprising given that every away team comments on the quality of the surface. "He really does work miracles on it" said Kidlington 1st team manager Gordon Geary.
Bake's has been with the KFC for many seasons and during this time he had fulfilled several different rolls including player, 1st team manager & reserve team manager, but he has never been happier at the club than in the roll he fills so excellently now.
He used to share the responsibility of tending the pitch with another 'Kidlington Legend' Terry Wiffen who sadley passed away a couple of years back. Since Terry's passing Bake's has really stepped up to been counted in his dedication to his hollowed turf. In fact he has said on several occasions he would "far rather that pitch not be used at all because these players spoil it" (tongue in cheek of cause!).
Well done Martin, long may it continue.
