Kidlington FC Match Report

FTL FUTBOL Hellenic League Premier Division

Tuesday 18th August 2009

Kidlington  5       Malmesbury Victoria  2

Kidlington produced another good performance to dispatch previously unbeaten Malmesbury in this match at Yarnton Road, the highlight of which was a hatrick for Adam Lovegrove, his first for the club. The game was marred by a freak injury to young midfielder Tom Hayday, who twisted his ankle just before k.o. which necessitated him being rushed to hospital.

Kidlington were into their stride from the off and the first action saw a glorious chance for Jimmy Deabill, Kieran Sanders crossed the ball to him and the Big striker got plenty on his headed attempt, but it sailed over the bar. Sanders was again the provider of a chance in the 7th minute. He slid a ball into Mark Baker who turned and shot, but again this attempt was off target. Kidlington took the lead in the 11th minute. Some more wonderful ball skill from Sanders saw him set up Jack Quainton. Quainton ran in on goal and finished smartly past Vic’s keeper Anthony Brown.  On the half hour Baker flicked the ball on to Deabill, Deabill tried to chip Brown but didn’t get enough loft on it and the keeper managed to catch it. Kidlington’s defence was found all at sea in the 38th minute. A ball over the top was not cleared which left Phil Corcoran a free run on goal. With McNamara racing out Corcoran opted to chip him, the ball sailed just over grazing the bar on its way. This was a let off for Kiddy and one they responded to immediately. Quainton crossed to the far post and Adam Lovegrove rifled the ball into the far corner of the net for 2 – 0. Kidlington really deserved this second, the only surprise was that it had taken so long in coming; such had been the home side’s dominance during the first period.

H.T. 2 – 0.

Kidlington again started well in this second half. An early attempt from Baker was saved by Brown before Vic’s got themselves a goal. Kidlington’s defence was again caught out by a ball over the top. This time half of them stood and appealed for off side whilst Vic’s Adam Giles raced goal-ward. He finished smartly past Tom McNamara giving him no chance. Again Kidlington didn’t take to long to respond. It was a similar goal to the one The Vic’s had just scored. A ball over the top was chased down by Lovegrove. As Brown came out Adam Lovegrove smashed the ball past him for 3 – 1. Brown then made a brilliant save to deny Sanders in the 62nd minute, before Lovegrove turned provider crossing the ball in to Sanders, who couldn’t have hit his shot any better, but Brown was equal to it and saved well. It didn’t take long before it was 4 – 1. Sanders who had been busy all evening cut in from the right and was taken out before he could get a shot away. It was inside the area, the linesman flagged and the referee awarded the spot kick. Usual penalty taker Deabill relinquished his responsibility to Lovegrove for a hatrick chance; Adam Lovegrove didn’t disappoint sending Brown the wrong way with his shot. The arrears were once more cut in the 80th minute. A corner by Kevin Coles seemed to elude everyone and sneaked in on the far post where substitute Tom Castle couldn’t prevent it crossing the line. Only 2 minutes later and Kidlington scored again. This time it was the ‘big man’. Another of Kiddy’s substitutes Lewis Coyle worked the ball well to Baker who shot from the edge of the box. The keeper did well to save this effort, however the ball fell to Jimmy Deabill and he finished from 6 yards. The last action of the match saw Deabill again come very close to adding a sixth. Another ball over the top did the trick. Deabill galloped onto it and this time chipped Brown from just outside the box, unluckily for him he got just too much on it and the ball cannoned away of the top of the bar. Kidlington finished the match with only 10 men on the field. After having used all their substitutes a nasty raking tackle on Mark Baker required treatment so he had to go off.

It was a good win and thoroughly deserved. Some of the interchanging of passes had been sweet to watch, but if I have a criticism it is that at times the team seem to overplay, especially in their own half. Today the root one stuff was really effective and getting the ball forward quickly was causing all sorts of problems to a frail Vic’s defence. In saying this with the talent that’s out there you understand why they want to knock it about, and when it comes off it’s a joy to watch. Next up Witney United away, in what I am sure will be are sternest test of the season so far. My best wishes and those of everyone at the club go to Tommy Heyday for a swift recovery from that nasty looking injury.
