(20/10/2009)
The council has received a number of protests about the untidy display of plastic boxes and other good outside a new shop and neighbouring property near the Westminster Bank.
The council supports these complaints. It has worked hard to improve the appearance of Kidlington. Many residents have complemented the council on the smart and attractive fencing and landscaped civiv garden recently completed at Exeter Hall.
Unfortunately, planning law does not permit us to take any action as long as the displays are on private land and within the highway boundary. All we can do is appeal to better nature and respect for the environment, as your parish representatives, together with a county councillor, have tried to do.
Nor does the planning framework allow us to exercise any influence or control over what kind of shops come to Kidlington. This is regrettable since the range and type of shops is very important for Kidlington' s shopping reputation and success. Too many take-aways, for instance, can lead to a big increase in litter and unfair competition.
Any influence that we can have may depend in the end on the support we get from local residents and we welcome your views.
